What Your Teeth Get from You Eating Protein
When you eat protein, it helps your body in many different ways. It can help you build up muscle and rebuild many different tissues within your body. Your teeth also benefit from you eating protein. Not only do you get healthier gums when you eat protein, you also get stronger teeth and an overall healthier mouth simply by making sure to eat enough protein throughout the day. Here are a few things you can do to increase your protein intake.

How to Get Enough Protein

One thing you can do to get enough protein is to eat protein bars or drink protein shakes as your snacks throughout the day. This fills you up, provides a good boost of protein, and helps your body use the nutrients in those items where it needs. This can be done to replace a meal as well. However, you need to make sure that you are still getting a healthy balance of foods, not just protein.

Another thing you can do to increase your protein is to eat lean meats. Avoiding fattier foods and carbs allows you to fill your diet with more protein than before. If you prepare most of your own meals, make sure to cut off any excess fat from the meats that you choose to eat. That way you get the most protein possible, without the parts that are not as healthy for your teeth, or the rest of your body.

If meat isn't your thing, you can also get protein from a variety of nuts. Consuming nuts also give your body essential vitamins and minerals to help it perform at its best. Fish is also a great way to get protein. In fact, almost every nutrient your body needs you can get from fish.

By eating protein, you can help strengthen your gums, teeth, and the rest of your body. If you want to find out more about protein and other nutrients your specific body needs, give us a call! We are always glad to help you on your road to better health.

How Sleeping with Your Mouth Open Hurts Your Mouth
When you sleep with your mouth open, your mouth gets dry. This means that your saliva does not have the ability to help keep your teeth clean and protected. While you sleep, your teeth are constantly being coated with saliva. The saliva helps to add minerals and nutrients to your teeth. The saliva also prevents tooth decay and fights against gingivitis. By sleeping with your mouth open, the saliva in your mouth dries out, and you become more susceptible to all of these issues. If you constantly sleep with your mouth open, make sure to come in and talk to us about it. We can help!

For Parents of Young Children
Toothpaste contains safe levels of fluoride if used appropriately. For children over the age of 2, that means applying a small amount which can be safely absorbed in the system. Children should be trained not to swallow too much toothpaste.

It's best for parents to apply the toothpaste to children's toothbrushes until cognitive skills reach a level of understanding that allows them to follow instructions and use good judgment.
